Hi almckelvie, The console is region free. The update doesn t change the region. As for the features that may come with the update, i would advise to contact Hong.

HOWTO: Change the Region of Your PS3 Blu-ray Drive.
One of the remaining problems with the PS3 even with all the released CFW s is you can only watch BLU-RAY movies from the REGION that you allowed to, as per this map below:
Along comes KureKure from PS3News, with a helpful tutorial on how-to get pass this last block remaining on your Jailbroken PS3 console:

after lotsa research and checking around i present to you 3 patch. txt files for lv2 patcher.
just copy the files into: /dev_hdd0/game/LV2000000/USRDIR
and the next time you start lv2 patcher you will have 3 new patches to choose from region a/b/c
once you patch you don t have to restart your ps3, it works right away. if you restart your ps3 the bd region is set to standard again
tested working for me on pal cechcxx machine with 3.55cfw rebug kmeaw using kmeaw s lv2 patcher v9.
this only works for blu ray and nothing else, for dvd the old xregistry trick applies

thanks a million times to everyone involved, this now makes the ps3 the best bd player for that prize range.

Now it might not at first seem front page news but truth is in some countries this type of firmware hack is what is needed for people to use to fight Sony in the legal system, case in point is Australia were PS2 modding was ruled legal because it make the system region-free.

very nice work another good selling point for 3.55 CFW. Now you can overseas blu ray and watch them in BLU RAY quality.. nothing no other game system can do or blu ray player for that matter

I thought this was possible for ages. There was a thread in the technical section that said it was possible at any rate.

I posted that before I saw PSN was out..i noticed it was down around 12 my time and it was posted online like 20 or so minutes later on another site that PSN is down.so i guess even when they shut down retail PSN, the whole thing gets shut down LOL.I was on it long enough to activate Metal Gear Solid PSOne and then tried to copy it to my PSP and thats when it went out

Sure-fire way to prevent PSN Bans: Update to OFW 3.60, none of these current methods are 100 safe for PSN access.
Does Region Free always work. A region free player is still no guarantee that every DVD or Blu-Ray disc will playback without issues. The majority of discs however.
PS3 4.76 Jailbreak has been finally arrived and now you have the time to Jailbreak the device in minute instead of wasting time on other things.
